Folks, my mother HAS COME HOME!
I spent the last few days with her and Betty.
Betty and I brought her home Thursday after we had a closure meeting with her therapists at Bradenton Health Center.
I truly want to thank the staff at BHC. I'm so glad Betty and I chose that center for my mother to begin her 'comeback'! I believe that they are #1 in the county for a reason.
Thursday, Betty, my mother and I went to a few stores to get groceries. My mother does a solid job of transfering in and out of the car. However, it does tire her out rather quickly.
You have to keep in mind that my mother has been in a rehab center and her room within the center for almost 4 months!
Friday we just hung out and went for walks around the Ironwood complex. Can't begin to tell you how much my mother enjoyed being home.
She was riunited with her 'other' room mates (kate and colin - their cats). Kate is my mother's cat. Betty told me that for the entire time that my mother was 'out of the house', Kate did not sleep in my mother's bed. The first night back, Kate and Moon were zzzzzzing together!
Friday we were also blessed by meeting the PT that will be working with my mother. My mother will have 6 weeks of 'in home' therapy! That will include physical, occupational and some social work.
While the therapist was there, she had my mother demonstrate how well she could walk. Using her quad cane, my mother walked from the couch to the front door AND BACK!
Betty was very impressive in handling my mother and helping her transfer. AGAIN BETTY COMES THROUGH! She is truly a blessing!
Many neighbors stopped by to say 'hi' and welcome my mother home. It was obvious that my mother felt very good to be back!
The overall goal for the next few weeks/months is for my mother to continue to move toward being more independent within the condo.
More later.
WE LOVE YOU MOM!

2-11 'Not so fast'
Just a quick update on MOON!
First, I need to give recognition to my Aunt.
With Betty's dedication to my mother/her sister, none of this would even be possible. I know I have told her numerous times, but THANK YOU BETTY, for all your help and sacrifice that you have made to help my mother.
My mother has been in her rehab center for 100 days.
She has come a long way since her procedure on October 16, 2008.
However, she still has the room to improve and her attitude/mindset is the same way!
Her plan was to be discharged today and return home.
However, the plan has been 'modified'. My mother has chosen to stay in BHC for another 2 weeks for addtional rehab (GREAT CHOICE!).
After the two weeks she will return home. At that point another agency will come in and perform an 'in-home' evaluation to assess what may need to be changed in the condo to ensure optimal success for my mother.
After the eval, in-home therapy will begin. We are not sure of the duration and frequency of the therapy but, my mother, Betty and I are very happy that this is the next step!
Once my mother's in-home therapy is complete she will go back to BHC for out patient therapy.
Please feel free to contact my mother, I'm SURE she would love to hear from you.

1-31 'My Inspiration'
I am down in Florida to visit my mother and see history in the making, the Steelers win SuperBowl #6! I was very fortunate to come down to Tampa looking for one ticket AND I FOUND ONE!
In visiting with my mother on Saturday, she continues to be my inspiration. I was able to witness her complete a therapy session! During that she walked on her own (using her quad walker). She was also 'transferring'. That is where she transfers from her wheelchair into a chair, then transfers back into the wheelchair.
The therapy sessions give my mother a good workout! She has lost a healthy amount of weight and looks simply amazing compared to when I last saw her in October! She seems very upbeat also compared to October.
When I last visited my mother, she seemed somewhat depressed (for obvious reasons). Some of her motivation/happiness is that she knows she will be leaving her rehab center soon!
As of February 12th, my mother will be 'released' from Bradenton HealthCare. She will return to the condo with Betty.
I will post more later.
WE LOVE YOU MOM!
GOO STEELERS! (My mother will be wearing my Jack Lambert jersey and waving her Terrible Towel on SB Sunday)!

Jan 15th
To catch everyone up, my mother is simply amazing.
She is able to walk about 90 feet or so with her cane.
Her physical therapist has said that she would be able to walk farther, but she (therapist) is more concerned about developing a QUALITY walk then how far she can walk.
Today, Betty and my mother (with assistance) completed a car transfer (where my mother is able to get into a car to travel). This is for when my mother goes back to visit Dr. Boyer on the 20th.
As some of you know, my mother's R arm has been slow to 'buy into the comeback'. Therefore the therapists have began electro-stimulus on her R arm. This has actually shown SLOW but immediate benefits. We are praying that this type of therapy can 'jog' the brain to tell it that there's ONE MORE part that needs to fall in line with 'Carole's Comeback'!!!!!!!!!!
There is some good news on the 'home' front. My mother's tentative discharge date is February 11th. I am planning to visit her sometime during that time as I am anxious to see her and make sure everyone is ok (Betty and the kitties)!

Dec 15th 'Walkin Shoes'
So my mother is walking again......GO CAROLE!
Now to clarify, she is using a hemi cane to help her walk.
The last week few weeks my mother started to walk between 10-12 feet.
Just last week Betty informed me that my mother walked out of her room, down the hall to the nurses station and back. A total of about 50-60 feet.
Overall, my mother sounds better each time we talk.
I talked to her speech therapist last week. He told me that my mother's emotions are beginning to return and that she is smiling and laughing more. He also said that her facial symmetry is returning.
One thing my mother will be working on to improve is her executive functioning. For example, to improve her ability to make plans and carry on a conversation.
I do know that she is getting very ancy to get back to 3950 Ironwood Circle #406.
If you have time, please give her a call between 5:30-6:00pm on her cell phone. 717-476-6420. My aunt Betty will answer because she is visiting with my mother during her dinner.
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MOM, WE ALL LOVE YOU!

Dec 4th 'Been awhile'
I apologize for not posting to my mother's blog, I have not forgotten about it.
I talked to my mother the other day and she sounds a lot better then even when I was down last.
My mother's RIGHT hamstring was sore the other day from the exercises!!!!! That means that she is slowly regaining FEELING in her R leg!
Along with the rehab on my mother's R leg, she NO LONGER NEEDS ASSISTANCE moving her R leg. She is able to move it independently!!!!!!!
My mother is also able to STAND ON HER OWN from the parallel bars!
I talked to the OT that works with her upper body. She told me that she was doing an ice massage on my mother's R arm the other day. Towards the end of the session, my mother mentioned that it was 'uncomfortable' so slowly she may be regaining feeling in her R arm as well!
We have been blessed with how well my mother, your sister, your good friend is progressing!!!!!!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
